At the Swedish Institute for International Affairs, I delivered a lecture on management of the Tsunami Earthquake of 2004. On that occasion, the Institute reported in its website: “Italy’s charismatic Head of Department of Civil Protection, Dr. Guido Bertolaso was the one who orchestrated Italy’s and Europe’s most rapid response to the 2004 tsunami in South East Asia. In 2001 the Italian Government delegated strategic and operative responsibility for national crisis management to the Department of Civil Protection which is under the auspices of the Office of the Prime Minister. Dr. Guido Bertolaso’s prompt response to the tsunami has served as a role model for other European countries’ crisis management development”.
