Head of the Department of the Italian Civil Protection. Nominated Head of the Department of Civil Protection 7 September, 2001 with the XIV Legislature reconfirmed by XV Legislature on 9 June, 2006. The position was confirmed for a third time on 27 May, 2008 with XVI Legislature.

 At the Swedish Institute for International Affairs, I delivered a lecture on management of the Tsunami Earthquake of 2004. On that occasion, the Institute reported in its website: “Italy’s charismatic Head of Department of Civil Protection, Dr. Guido Bertolaso was the one who orchestrated Italy’s and Europe’s most rapid response to the 2004 tsunami in South East Asia. In 2001 the Italian Government delegated strategic and operative responsibility for national crisis management to the Department of Civil Protection which is under the auspices of the Office of the Prime Minister. Dr. Guido Bertolaso’s prompt response to the tsunami has served as a role model for other European countries’ crisis management development”.

 I WAS INVITED TO GIVE A KEYNOTE SPEECH AT THE WILTON PARK INSTITUTE, academically independent and non-profit-making Executive Agency of the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), IN LONDON ON: “IMPROVING EUROPE’S DISASTER RESPONSE”.

 Whole hearted devotion has been given to enhance relationships with the Euro-Mediterranean Countries.

 “THE ITALIAN CIVIL PROTECTION, LED BY MR. BERTOLASO HAS BEEN AWARDED BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE ITALIAN REPUBLIC TWO GOLD CIVIL HONOUR MEDALS (2004 AND 2006), FOR ITS ORGANIZATION OF THE SEARCH AND RESCUE ACTIVITIES ON BEHALF OF THE SOUTH-ASIAN POPULATION HIT BY THE TSUNAMI AND IT HAS BEEN INVITED BY THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT TO PARTECIPATE IN THE PARADE AT THE CHAMPS-ELISEÉ ON JULY 14, 2003 AND PARTAKE IN THEIR CELEBRATIONS.”
